GeoSmart Niagara

GeoSmart Niagara was a component of the $32 million SuperBuild funding program established by the Province of Ontario and led by the Ministry of Natural Resources. The major goal of the GeoSmart Ontario initiative is to support local economic development and provide benefits and efficiencies to local governments through Internet access to land based (geographic) information.

Partners of GeoSmart Niagara submitted an application for funding in October 2002. The GeoSmart submission was successful and government funding was secured for the duration of twelve months. November 1, 2003 was the official start date of the GeoSmart Niagara project.

The YourNiagara (formerly "Connecting Niagara") Community website and GeoSmart have many points of integration and in 2006 were combined into a single project called YourNiagara/GeoSmart. This project has moved into the sustainable phase and funding is available until 2008.

Niagara Region, in conjunction with the partners, manages and maintains the infrastructure (hardware and software) and provides staff for the GeoSmart Niagara component of the project.
