Emergency Preparedness

There are ways to prepare for emergencies and disasters, which can happen at any time. Something as simple as an extended power outage or a severe storm can cause inconvenience. Be prepared at home and at work. Try to have enough supplies on hand for up to three days to be self-sufficient.

  • The Emergency Management Ontario site has some useful advice and information to follow and extensive lists of things to put in your survival kits.
  •  "Get Prepared" is the federal government site that provides information on preparing home and car emergency kits and monthly safety tips. Do you have your fire escape and rally point plan for your family? Have you practiced fire drills in your home and at work?
  • The Canadian Red Cross provides essential information on Disaster Preparedness, and assists with Disaster Responses via its Disaster Services. Additionally, the chaos and confusion that accompany war and natural disasters often separate families when they need each other most. The Canadian Red Cross Restoring Family Links program helps people in Canada to re-establish contact with immediate family members after separation due to war, internal conflict, natural disaster and other humanitarian crises.
  • Are you someone or do you have a loved one/friend who lives with a disability/special need ? There is a special guide to assist with preparing for emergencies. Download the Preparedness Guide (you need to have Adobe Reader).
